Tiger JNP-S10U 5.5 Cup Rice Cooker Review

Tiger JNP-S10U 5.5 Cup Rice Cooker would be your ideal kitchen appliance if you just want to cook white rice effortlessly. Forget about those fancy and high-tech models, get down to the basics of good rice cooking. With this 5-star rating rice cooker, it’s hard to go wrong.

Tiger is less known by American consumers. But it’s not the case in Japan. In Japan, Tiger is the number two brand for rice cookers following Zojirushi. It’s not that uncommon for a Tiger rice cooker to last for 20 years or even longer. That speaks volume about the quality and durability of the products.

3,5.5 and 10 Cup Capacity

This rice cooker line has three different capacities of uncooked rice: JNP-S55U has 3 cups, JNP-S10U 5.5 cups and JNP-S18U 10 cups. The 3-cup cooker would be perfect for singles or small families, the 5.5 cup for medium-sized and 10-cup for large families. Rice doubles upon cooking.

Heating Technology for Tiger JNP-S Cup Rice Cooker

Since there is no computerized processor or chip in this rice cooker, the heating is very straightforward. The non-stick inner pot sits in a large vessel. The vessel houses a heating sensor on the bottom to heat up the inner pot when cooking.

As basic as it seems, the Tiger rice cookers have to pass very vigorous testing before they reach to consumers. Here are some examples: functional and durability testing, electric testing and food sanitation testing. Reliability and durability are the hallmarks of Tiger’s rice cookers.

Special “Keep Warm” heating element in the lid and the body ensures the rice to be warm up to 12 hours without drying out or burning.

This line of rice cookers also has optional steaming function. You may steam vegetables, seafood, poultry and many other foods. You have to buy a steam tray as it doesn’t come with the rice cooker.

Easy to Clean the Non-Stick Inner Pot and Moisture Collector

The inner pot and the plastic moisture collector are all removable for easy cleaning. As long as you take care of the non-stick inner pot from scratching, rice will not stick to the bottom of the pot.

helpful-tipsHelpful Tips for Tiger JNP-S Rice Cooker

  1. This rice cooker is designed for cooking white rice. You may not get the best result for cooking brown and other types of rice.
  2. You may add some store-bought salsa and chicken stock to make it Spanish rice instead of just plain old white rice.
  3. If you need to make a second batch for a big party at your house, wait for 30 to 60 minutes before using the rice cooker. Use cold water/broth only because the sensor wouldn’t work properly if temperature is above 95F/35C.
  4. Don’t use alkaline water over PH9 as it will break down the starch resulting in sticky rice and yellow color.

Tiger JNP-S Rice Cooker Customer Reviews

4.5 out of 5It’s very rare to have a 5-star rating by most of the customers. Some who bought this rice cooker have owned it for 5,15 and eve 25 years. To call the Tiger rice cooker a “household workhorse” is not an exaggeration. Others since gifted this rice cooker to their children and other family members.

Pros and Cons of Tiger JNP-S Rice Cooker

ProsThis is truly a fool-proof rice cooker. Cooking tasty and fluffy rice is as easy as push a button. If you like everything simple and easy to operate, this is it. Keeping it warm doesn’t mean the rice will be dried out on the bottom.

ConsThis is a non-product related issue. Some of the Tiger’s online User Manuals are illegible. There are two customers who reported issues with the heater for the JNP-S18U 10 cup model in 2011. One of them was in Thailand.

Price, Warranty and Where to Buy – Tiger JNP-S Rice Cooker

One-year manufacturer limited warranty is offered. Price for this line of rice cookers is not as cheap as the Aroma’s. But like the old saying, you get what you pay for. There are many online and retail outlets that carry this line, but I prefer shopping on Amazon due to the many choices and the competitive pricing.
