Le Creuset Cast Iron Wok Review



Le Creuset is perhaps the most well-known name in the world of cast iron cookware. This enameled cast-iron wok is Le Creuset’s adaptation to the Asian-styled cooking. Beautifully designed and handcrafted in four gorgeous colors (cherry, black onyx, flame and Marseille), this wok is every cook’s dream.

If you’ve owned any of the Le Creuset’s cookware or are familiar with the painstaking processes each cookware piece has to go through, you’d appreciate why it commands such a respect. Each piece¬† is uniquely crafted and it’s like each of our respective DNAs.

The manufacturing process consists of several major stages:

  1. Weigh in raw materials from 50% recycled steel and iron, plus Le Creuset’s secret ingredients.
  2. The raw materials are then transferred to a furnace over 1000 degrees Celsius.
  3. The melting iron is poured into a creuset (a melting pot in English).
  4. The hot sand is injected into the mold and the basic shape takes form.
  5. The wok is sanded, polished and fettled to remove any rough edges.
  6. The wok is subject to a shot blasting process to remove oxidization to create an adhesive surface ready for the enamel.
  7. A quick check takes place to decide which piece will continue and which piece will be sent back to the furnace for rework.
  8. Each wok is coated with three layers of vitreous enamel:
    • The first layer is the ground clear coating that seals the cast iron from all sides.
    • The second layer is the colored interior enamel.
    • The third layer is the beautiful exterior color, often times with two graded shades.
  9. After the enamel process, each wok is etched and fired in a large oven over 840 degrees C to vitrified the cookware to produce shock-resistance finish and durable cookware.
  10. Another quality check is conducted before the cookware is sent to the warehouse for shipment.

This wok has the standard wok dimensions, i.e. 14 inches in diameter and 4 inches deep. It’s a handsome size to cook up enough food for a mid to large family.

Designed specifically as an Asian wok, this piece delivers on the promise of a quality cast-iron with even heat distribution and excellent heat retention. Even though it’s hard for anyone of us at home to attain the BTU (British Thermal Unit – a basic measure of thermal energy) of a commercial wok burner in an Asian restaurant, at least this cast-iron wok will help us compensate for the shortage of BTU by accumulating and retaining the heat from the burner to produce a decent Chinese stir-fry.

The Le Creuset wok has a flat bottom that eliminates the need for a supporting ring and also with balanced stability from the top to the bottom. The inside of the wok is shaped like a traditional wok with its curvature so minimum cooking oil is needed for cooking. Therefore it’s healthier with less fat.

The wok, like all Le Creuset cookware can be used in many heat sources such as stove top, including induction as well as in the oven. Bear in mind that the highest temperature for the wok in the oven is 400 degrees Fahrenheit. If you want to use the lid in the oven cooking, the phenolic knob will only withstand heat up to 350 degrees F.

The one major difference between this enameled cast-iron wok vs. a traditional Chinese wok is that this wok takes a few minutes to heat up and the speed is very gradual. So to get the right temperature for stir-frying, you’ll need to set the heat on medium to high. Once the desirable temperature is reached, it will retain the heat very well.

The other difference is that you’d better off using your silicone or wooden spatula to stir the food quickly and constantly since you can’t flip the wok due to the weight.

Even though Le Creuset said there was no need to season the inside of the wok, many customers still found it beneficial to season it with cooking oil or Pam spray so food won’t stick to the wok.

ProsIt’s made of cast-iron through a meticulous process with a dozen of checkpoints by skilled craftsmen in Le Creuset’s foundry in northern France. It delivers on the promise of high quality, beautiful design and lifetime return on the initial investment. It’s adaptive to multiple heat sources and performs well no matter what. It’s oven safe up to 400 degrees F. It cooks food evenly and produces great flavors.

ConsIt’s very expensive. You can buy quite a few traditional Chinese woks with the price of one Le Creuset wok. It’s very heavy like all cast-iron cookware. Handling takes care and attention. The smooth interior cooking surface will not measure up with a traditional Chinese wok in imparting flavors from the ingredients and seasoning.

Price, Warranty and Where to Buy

As I mentioned in the Cons above, this is a very expensive wok comparing to the average wok prices on the market. However, Le Creuset stands behind its promise on the quality and craftsmanship and offers a lifetime warranty. In fact, one customer shared the pleasant experience for replacing a defective cookware.
