Gordon Ramsay Stainless Steel 14-Inch Wok Review

Gordon Ramsay’s Stainless Steel 14-Inch Wok resembles in many ways the All-Clad Wok I reviewed today. Whether you want to cook fiery Chinese Kung Pao Beef or savory Pad Thai, this wok will deliver rapid heat, sizzling sound and delicious food.

The wok is not only made with durable material, but also reflects Chef Ramsay’s relentless pursuit of perfection.

If you’d like to watch reality cooking shows, you might have seen the Kitchen Nightmares hosted by the celebrity Chef, Gordon Ramsay. Guess what, he, too has designed a collection of cookware and tableware under the Royal Doulton’s brand name.

Royal Doulton is a brand name under WWRD, the leading brand which manufactures, distributes and markets luxury home and lifestyle brands such as Waterford, Wedgewood and Royal Doulton and other brands.

Capacity: 14 Inches in Diameter

The Ramsay wok is measured 14 inches in diameter and 4 inches in depth, which are the standard dimensions of wok of this size. The handsome size allows enough room to cook food evenly while sparing some for tossing and flipping. As far as the number of people you can serve, it’s versatile to feed from a small family to a large one. Sometimes left-over tastes even better as the flavor is marinaded in.

Heating: Up to 500 Degrees F

Tri-Ply Construction

Similar to the All-Clad Stainless Wok, the Gordon Ramsay wok is made of tri-ply construction which features a thick aluminum core sandwiched by two layers of 18/10 stainless steel on the interior cooking surface and the exterior layer.

Best of Both Worlds

The beauty of this design is to highlight the best of both worlds. Aluminum is one of the most heat conductive materials for rapid heat, even heat distribution and retention. Stainless steel is known for its durability and beautiful appearance.

This wok is designed to withstand temperature up to 500 degrees F for multiple heat sources: stove top, grill, oven, broil, just to name a few. It’s also dishwasher safe. I am not sure this feature is that practical in everyday life. Who would stick a 14″ wok in the dishwasher?

Little Things That Make a Big Difference

What impresses me the most besides the hard-core construction and materials are the finer touches.

The bottom of the wok is designed with flat cross-section to prevent it from sliding on a cooking surface. The wok also has a wide spout for easy, non-drip pouring if you can lift the heavy wok single-handedly.

There is a cylindrical handle made of stainless steel double-riveted to the pan for stability. A helper handle on the other side if you need to carry the wok to the table.

Easy to Use and to Clean

Using a wok is very easy. If you need any help, get a good Chinese or Asian cookbook to start.

The Breath of a Wok is a great cookbook by Grace Young who shared her expertise in the Chinese cooking as well as the inseparable tie between food and a way of life. The book includes 125 mouth-watering recipes showcasing the versatility of wok cooking.

Cleaning is a breeze with the stainless steel. I’d recommend you wash it by hand with some warm, soapy water. Soak the wok in water if any fond is collected on the bottom.

Pros and Cons

ProsThis wok is a marriage between function and form. The three-layer construction excels over searing heat without any dent, warp or corrosion. This wok represents Gordon Ramsay’s demand for perfection. A lifetime warranty speaks volume about Chef Ramsay’s commitment to quality and customer service.

ConsThe wok is expensive like many top-of-the-line ones. It’s not designed for induction heating cook tops. You’ll have to shop for a lid if you’d use it for braising, simmering, etc.
