Aroma NRC-1000 18-Cup Rice Cooker Review

Aroma NRC-1000 18-Cup Rice Cooker is one of the very few rice cookers with 100% stainless steel inner pot, steamer and colander that are not Teflon-coated. The surgical stainless steel cooking surface doesn’t erode or react with the food you are cooking. You can enjoy the maximum taste and nutrients from the food without the health concern from Teflon-coated cookware.

This rice cooker is marketed as “Whole Grain Gourmet” by NutriWare, part of Aroma Housewares. The rice cooker is also a multi-tasker for steaming foods and cooking pasta. If you are interested in healthy eating and get more bang for your buck, look no further.

Versatile Capacity

check-today's-rice-cooker-dealIf you are not aware, Aroma’s rice cookers are measured in cooked rice capacity as opposed to uncooked rice in many Asian brands. This rice cooker will meet your family needs from small to large with capacity of 4 to 18 cups (cooked) or 2 to 9 cups (uncooked).

Heating Technology – Fuzzy Logic

The NRC1000 is equipped with Fuzzy Logic technology which is on the cutting-edge of heating technology in the rice cooker industry. What it means is that the rice cooker is smart enough to self-adjust the heating power and cooking time on its own depending on what you are cooking. For instance, it will take shorter time to cook white rice comparing to that for brown rice. It’s fool-proof and you can expect perfectly prepared meals without any fuss.

Easy to Use and Clean

Given the inner pot, the steaming basket, and the colander are made of stainless steel, you can either hand wash them or stick them in the dishwasher after each use. Do the same with the rice paddle and the measuring cup. Make sure to place the plastic utensils on the top shelf of the dishwasher.

Using this rice cooker is a breeze. All you need to do is to measure the ingredients, add water and push an appropriate button on the control panel. Then you are done.

Other Features

Cord: No special feature, just a regular power chord.

helpful-tipsHelpful Tips

  1. Rinse the rice thoroughly in tap water until the water is clear for better cooked rice as well as to prevent boil-over.
  2. You can cook quinoa in this rice cooker by choosing the “white rice” button. Again rinse it well under running water before placing it in the inner pot.
  3. If you cook pearl barley in the rice cooker, allot about 45 minutes to cook. Add chicken broth for more flavor.

Customer Reviews on NRC-1000

3.5 out of 5The reviews are mixed. Some people loved it and other didn’t care for it. The reasons why people liked it so much was because it is made of stainless steel with all the cooking surface and of high quality gauge (304 grade). It’s multi-functional to cook rice, steam foods, cook pasta, and boil potatoes. The biggest complaint I’ve read is that the rice on the bottom is brown and crusty. The steamer is quite small to cook for a family.

I want to add a quick note that I am reviewing this product on an exceptional basis. I set out to review products with 4.0 or better rating. This one doesn’t fit into my selection criteria. However, since many people are searching for stainless steel rice cookers and there are not too many on the market, I’ve decided to write this detailed review. This review was inspired by a site visitor with a great question.

Pros and Cons

ProsThe rice cooker is made of high quality stainless steel for the inner cooking pot, the steamer and the colander. It does more than one job (cook rice, steam whatever and boil pasta, etc.). It’s very easy to clean and to use. You can load up all the parts in the dishwasher after each use. The Instruction Manual is well written and thoroughly prepared. The receipt book included is just exceptional in the quality of content and the presentation. You’ll find lots of interesting facts about different grains, the nutritional values and how to prepare them.

ConsThe rice is overcooked on the bottom. Unplug the chord immediately upon cooking to prevent further drying on the bottom.

Price, Warranty and Where to Buy – Aroma NRC-1000 Rice Cooker

2-year warranty is offered by Aroma NutriWare, which doubles the warranty time in the industry. You need to register your rice cooker after the purchase. For your convenience, I am including the link here. You can also call the Customer Service at 1-800-276-6286 (M-F) 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.

The price for NRC-1000 is in the mid-range in the rice cooker market, similar to Sanyo and Panasonic rice cookers. I compared the price on Amazon and that on Aroma’s NutriWare’s website. Amazon’s price was about $15 cheaper. Price does fluctuate so make sure you do your own comparison shopping online and even in physical retail stores to get the best value for your money.
