Aroma ARC-616SB Sensor Logic Rice Cooker Review

With the release of Aroma ARC-616SB Sensor Logic Rice Cooker and Food Steamer, Aroma has entered into a market space that has been previously dominated by Japanese rice cooker manufacturers such as Zojirushi and Panasonic.

While at a more affordable price, ARC-616SB is packed with multifunctional features from cooking rice, stews, soups, oatmeals to cakes. It could become the go-to kitchen appliance for someone who lives in an urban apartment constrained by space or a college kid who doesn’t want to mess around with different cooking utensils.

2 to 5 Cups in Dry Rice Capacity

The 2 to 6 cups capacity refers to uncooked rice that doubles upon cooking. Let’s assume one cup per person as a side dish, the 2 to 6 cups can easily feed a small to medium-sized family. One caveat is that the cup is about ¾ of the standard US measuring cup so it’s a tad smaller.

Heating: Sensor Logic

The Sensor Logic by Aroma is another name for the Fuzzy Logic known in Japanese rice cookers. By having a micro-computer chip in the rice cooker, it’s able to detect what’s being cooked, the quantity of rice vs. water and adjust the cooking temperature accordingly so the rice comes out perfectly each time. The heating element sits on the inside of the housing in contact with the outside of the inner cooking pot.

Easy to Use and to Clean

The same process applies to cooking rice or soup. Measure dry and liquid ingredients, add them to the pot, select a menu option and then press “Start” button. Comparing to cooking rice on the stovetop, this takes all the guesswork out for you. You can use the time spared to do other things such as doing a load of laundry, helping your kid with homework or sipping a glass of wine.

When the rice or meal is done, the rice cooker switches to “Keep Warm” function until you are ready to serve.

Wipe the exterior housing with a damp cloth after each use. The inner pot, steamer basket and rice spatula are all dishwasher safe. Personally, I’d still hand wash the inner pot as it may get banged up in the dishwasher with other dishes. Remove the steam vent and wipe it with a damp cloth and replace it back in the unit.

Other Features

LCD and Timer: One interesting improvement from previous Aroma rice cookers is the control panel is placed on top of the rice cooker for easier viewing and operating vs. the front panel.

The delayed timer of up to 15 hours is for you to set the rice cooker at a certain time while away from home. For example, you can get everything ready and set the cooker to start, say at 5 p.m. that day. By the time you get home around 6:30 p.m., rice would be ready and kept warm in the pot. All you’ll need to do is to decide what to pair up with rice whether it’s a stir-fry dish or something else.

Menu Selection:

The ARC-616SB has 8 menu choices: White Rice, Brown Rice, Steam, Saute-Then-Simmer, Slow Cook, Oatmeal, Soup and Cake.

It goes without saying that oatmeal is used for making breakfast as well as porridge often served in Asian families for breakfast. Saute-Then-Simmer is such a convenient feature for making Spanish rice or risotto. It saves hassles and cleaning time as opposed to using a separate pan to sauté and then transfer the ingredients to the rice cooker.

You can steam meats and vegetables without cooking rice simultaneously or with rice. When steaming without rice, make sure to add 3 cups of water in the inner pot and then place the steamer basket on top.

Bear in mind you can only cook up to 4 cups of uncooked rice when steaming at the same time to allow enough room for rice to foam during the cooking process. When using steaming, cut the vegetables or meats down into bite-size to reduce the cooking time.

Slow Cook can be set from 2 to 10 hours depending on what you’d use it for. Soup is set for cooking up to 35 minutes and the Cake function is great for making a cake or cup cakes.

Customer Reviews

4.5 out of 5.0

It’s a relatively new product on the market and I’d only found two reviews on Target.

Pros and Cons

  • Serves as so many cooking purposes in the kitchen from cooking rice, making soups, steaming vegetables to baking cakes.
  • Easy to use and it doesn’t take much to clean.
  • Whether you like brown or white rice, it always comes out fluffy and aromatic. No more burned rice.
  • It’s much more affordable than the Japanese counterparts. You can easily buy two Aroma ARC-616SB for the price of one Zojirushi rice cooker.

  • It takes much longer to cook rice with the Sensor Logic technology, twice as long as the one without. That’s why the delayed timer is so handy so you don’t have to wait for rice when getting home.

Price, Warranty and Where to Buy

It was listed as under $85 on Amazon but Target had it for under $60 online. I am not sure why the price differs so much between the two. It was not available on Aroma’s website yet at the review. I suspect maybe Aroma introduced this model at Target first as a test and then increased the price after it was accepted by the general public. Either way, it’s a lot cheaper than a comparable Zojirushi rice cooker.

If you haven’t used a rice cooker before, you’ve missed a lot of benefits in modern appliances. It’s so fool-proof to cook rice vs. the stovetop method. Not only it saves you time in watching the water boil and adjust the burner temperature, it guarantees perfectly cooked rice time and time again.

These days so many people have got on the band wagon of gluten-free diet, rice has become even more popular besides as one of the most consumed grains in the world.
